What is API?
An API stands for Application Programming Interface or a defined way for another program to interact with your program.
REST stands for Representational State Transfer and is an architectural style for exposing your program using existing protocols, typically HTTP. Think of it as hyperlinks (URL) you type in your browser to access different parts of your app respectively.
REST APIs leverage HTTP request types to indicate the desired action.
Some APIs also allow query string parameters like you’d see in your browser. This is purely up to the programmer on what features they support.
What is an API key? Is it important?
An application programming interface key (API key) is a code passed in by computer programs calling an Application Programming Interface (API) to identify the calling program, its developer, or its user to the Web site. API keys are used to track and control how the API is being used, for example, to prevent malicious use or abuse of the API (as defined perhaps by term of service).
The API key often acts as both a unique identifier and a secret token for authentication, and will generally have a set of access rights on the API associated with it. An API key will give developers access to data, or content.
-> So you shouldn't reveal it to someone you don't know.
